The Indigenous Student Summer Leadership Program offers leadership opportunities, credits, and paid work experiences for Indigenous secondary school students across the Toronto District School Board.

📢 NEW EXHIBITION ~ André Perugia: A Design Legend Unveiled

Opening October 30, the Bata Shoe Museum explores the work of one of the most significant and under-researched footwear designers of the 20th century, André Perugia. A pioneering Italian-French shoe designer, André Perugia (1893-1977) is known for his architecturally innovative and technically masterful footwear designs.

Throughout the run of the exhibit, over 95 examples of the designer’s work dating from the 1920s through the 1960s, will be featured; shoes from contemporary designers inspired by his vision will also be on display and highlight the historical importance of Perugia’s work, contextualizing it within the larger framework of fashion across the decades.

This exhibition is curated by @nishib21 BSM Curator and Manager of Exhibitions and features generous loans from: @museedelachaussure, @villederomans and @fondationazzedinealaia. The exhibition also includes donations from Maison @schiaparelli and @manoloblahnik.

Today we observe Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The Bata Shoe Museum is open to visitors from 10am to 5pm.

To commemorate this day, join us this evening for a conversation with Ojibwe Kwe author, educator, and Residential School survivor, Karen Chaboyer, alongside her son, Charles Chaboyer. Tea and bannock will be served provided by @candace_catering_.

In this video, we honour the work of Cree artist, Evelyn Marie Jebb, a member of the Opaskwayak Cree Nation. Evelyn made these wrap-around moccasins between 1980 and 1986. They are made from brain-tanned moose hide and feature flat stitch beaded floral designs on both vamps using glass seed beads. The moose used to make these moccasins was harvested by Evelyn’s son.

Heels were adopted into Western fashion at the turn of the 17th century, initially for riding. This 'thigh' boot features a high stacked leather heel and was clearly designed to be worn in harsh riding conditions. Despite the potential usefulness of this type of boot to early cowboys, examples such as these would have only been available to the very wealthy.

In this intimate conversation between two Canadian fashion icons, Thierry-Maxime Loriot and Jeanne Beker, they will discuss the transformation of fashion from concept to runway spectacle to museum artifact, exploring how iconic designs evolve from commercial creation to cultural preservation and what it means to curate a legacy that bridges art, performance, and haute couture.

It's the last day to see Exhibit A: Investigating Crime and Footwear! 🔍

Explore the development of footwear forensics as a means of solving crime and the social constructions of criminality from the nineteenth century to today. It also considers how clothing and footwear play roles in cultural ideas of criminality informed by assumptions and bias. It will take visitors on a journey to sleuth out the central but complex role of footwear in crime, policing, the judiciary system and our cultural ideas of criminality.
