SUMMARY:Moccasin-Making with the Manitobah Storyboot School
DESCRIPTION:Cost: $195/person\, FREE for Indigenous Youth and Young Adults (First Nation/Metis/Inuit ages 12-30 yrs)\nWhen: Saturday June 1\, 8\, and 15 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm\nLength: 18 hours total (over 3 days)\nWhere: Footprints Lecture Room at the Bata Shoe Museum \nLearn the traditional art of moccasin-making with expert Indigenous artisan Rosary Spence! \nThis workshop is designed to teach classic hand sewing techniques in beading and leatherwork. Rosary Spence will guide you through the steps of creating moccasins by hand including pattern-making\, beadwork\, design\, construction and care for your finished product. Students will be provided with all the necessary tools to complete their project and guided through the process from start to finish. This is a course best suited for youth 12+ and adults. \nPlease show your QR code in your registration confirmation or give your name to our Visitor Services desk when checking in. Born and on western shores of James Bay\, Fort Albany First Nation\, Mushkego Cree Territory\, Spence strongly believes in the ability to heal our communities through the strength of the youth and the wisdom of our elders. Music has been a lifetime journey for Spence\, singing since early childhood and playing an array of instruments since her early teens. Spence possesses an extensive background and experience as a designer\, a performing artist\, and an arts facilitator. How well do you know The Godfather Part 1 and 2\, The Usual Suspects\, Reservoir Dogs\, and Goodfellas?  Get ready to boast your movie trivia knowledge\, while competing for prizes! Tickets include one beverage and access to explore the entire museum after hours\, including Exhibit A: Investigating Crime and Footwear so be sure to come early. Attend as individuals or as a team of a maximum of 6 people. This is a 19+ event. Additional drinks and light snacks will be available for purchase.    \nPlease note\, tables will be assigned for this trivia based on team number. No registration is required\, drop-in only. \nABOUT THE HOST\n \nTianna Henry believes that everyone deserves to find a place that celebrates exactly what they bring to the table. As the Events & Community Outreach Lead at Glad Day Bookshop (the world’s oldest 2SLGBTQIA+ Bookshop)\, she’s been giving platforms to 2SLGBTQIA+ artists and performers since 2018. \nTianna is the founder of Glad Day TV\, the virtual events platform launched early pandemic\, which has been viewed by tens of thousands of people. She’s also the co-founder of Trans Toolkits\, a non-profit that supports trans people in getting the gender affirming tools they need. And lastly\, she’s a DEI consultant specializing in educating companies and their team members on the 2SLGBTQIA+ history\, community values\, stigmatization\, and best practices in allyship. Tianna has been featured in OutTV\, Toronto Star and the BBC.

Through this hands-on workshop\, participants will walk away with a greater understanding of historical Indigenous bead work\, tools and techniques\, and will work to complete a small beaded medallion. Space is limited\, register today to avoid disappointment. No experience is necessary!  \nBUY YOUR TICKETS  \nPlease present your ticket at the Visitor Services upon arrival. \nThis workshop will take place in-person in Footprints at the Bata Shoe Museum (located on the ground level). Katie is inspired to create work that is reflective of her family and background\, the natural world\, and draws inspiration from both Cree and Mohawk styles of beadwork. Katie currently resides in Toronto\, Ontario.
