Inspired by the BSM’s current exhibition Dressed to Impress: Footwear and Consumerism in the 1980s\, and moderated by celebrated journalist Nathalie Atkinson\, panelists Nishi Bassi\, Suzanne Boyd\, and Allisa Swanson\, will share their insights on the cultural significance of this dynamic era and it’s lasting impression in the world of film and television. All galleries will be open for viewing\, drinks and snacks available for purchase.  \nEvening Agenda\nDoors Open –  7:00 pm\nPanel Talk – 7:30 pm\nQ&A – 8:30 pm\nClose – 10:00 pm \nMEET THE SPEAKERS:\n\nABOUT NATHALIE ATKINSON: \n \nNathalie Atkinson is a Toronto-based culture journalist and film critic. A regular contributor to The Globe and Mail\, Zoomer magazine\, and member of the Toronto Film Critics Association\, she has also published freelance writing for FASHION\, Vulture\, CNN Style\, BBC Culture\, and Noir City. In addition to guest lectures and on-stage interviews at Hot Docs\, TIFF\, VIFF\, TIFA\, the Toronto Public Library\, the AGO\, and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston\, Nathalie is the creator and host of Designing the Movies\, a monthly film series of notable art direction\, costume and production design on screen.  \n\n\nABOUT SUZANNE BOYD: \n \nSuzanne Boyd is the editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Zoomer Magazine. Prior to her current role — Suzanne was named Editor-in-Chief of Suede magazine\, which was named to Advertising Age’s prestigious A List and was also lauded in The New York Times\, The New York Daily News\, Italian Vogue and Women’s Wear Daily. Renowned for her pivotal role as Editor-In-Chief (1996-2004) of the then Rogers Media fashion title FLARE magazine\, Suzanne was the first person of colour to helm a national Canadian publication. Suzanne’s reported essays and personal journalism have also appeared in Maclean’s\, The Toronto Star\, O The Oprah Magazine\, O at Home and Vogue. As one of Canada’s original influencers\, Suzanne regularly appears on TV\, radio\, and digital platforms – providing lead commentary from politics to pop culture; and is perennially named to multiple Best Dressed lists. Her first job in costumes was in Los Angeles as on the show Gun starting James Gandolfini and Patricia Arquette. Her costume design credits include Firefly Lane on Netflix\, Disney’s Turner and Hooch\, The CW’s The 100\, and her current project So Help Me Todd for CBS. Allisa is often referred to as the ‘kind” costume designer who inspired actress Selma Blair to publicly share her Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis in 2018. \n\n\nABOUT NISHI BASSI: \n \nNishi Bassi is a Curator and Exhibitions Project Manager with over 10 years of experience in the museum industry. Her educational background is in British history\, and current research interests include fashion\, consumer culture\, and post-colonialism. She is also an EDI champion\, who strategically plans and advocates for change to ensure that accessibility remains a priority in all projects. Nishi has been with the Bata Shoe Museum since 2013 where she currently works as the Curator and Manager of Exhibitions. She also holds a volunteer position on the Board of Directors for ICOM Canada. “Dressed to Impress: Footwear and Consumerism in the 1980s” is her first major solo exhibition\, and will be accompanied by a publication in spring 2024.

DESCRIPTION:Cost: $55/person\nFriends of the BSM: $50/person\nWhen: May 18\, 2024 from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm\nLength: 4 hours total (One hour will be dedicated to lunch)\nWhere: Bata Shoe Museum \nJoin us at the Bata Shoe Museum for an exciting workshop celebrating the fusion of art\, nature\, and footwear design! In celebration of our In Bloom: Flowers & Footwear exhibition\, we’re thrilled to present a Clog Planter Workshop hosted by artist and professional gardener Wendy Woodworth. In this hands-on workshop\, participants will explore the creative potential of wooden clogs by transforming them into one-of-a-kind planters. No experience is necessary!  \nBUY YOUR TICKETS  \nPlease present your ticket at the Front Desk upon arrival. \nThis workshop will take place in-person in Footprints at the Bata Shoe Museum (located on the ground level). All materials and general access to the museum are included. Please arrive 5-15 minutes prior so that the workshop can begin on schedule. Limited spots available. Refunds only permitted with over 72 hours notice. Within 72 hours notice\, all ticket sales are considered final and refunds will not be issued. Please contact shan@batashoemuseum.ca with any questions. \n\nABOUT THE ARTIST: \n \nWendy Woodworth graduated from U of T with an honours Bsc. specializing in Botany. Gardening experience was gained working for the Toronto Parks Department both outside and in the greenhouses. \nStarting in 1982 she worked at Spadina Museum\, first helping with the rehabilitation of the grounds and then managing the 6 acres\, growing the annuals and vegetables used in the gardens and supplying decorative plants and flower arrangements for the house. \nBecause Spadina is an historic site\, Wendy did much research into the availability of plant material in Toronto over the time period of the house\, which was originally built in 1866 and has given talks to garden clubs and historic societies.
