SUMMARY:Moccasin-Making with the Manitobah Storyboot School
DESCRIPTION:Learn the traditional art of moccasin-making with expert Indigenous artisan Rosary Spence! \nThis is a six-week (18 hour) course that’s FREE for Indigenous Youth and Young Adults (First Nation/Metis/Inuit ages 12-30 yrs). The registration fee for all others is $180. \n6-Week (18-Hour) Course with Rosary Spence \nWhen: Saturday\, November 5\, 12\, 19\, 26\, December 3\, 10\, from 12-3:00pm \nWhere: Bata Shoe Museum\, 327 Bloor St W\, Toronto\, ON M5S 1W7.  \nPlease show your QR code in your registration confirmation or give your name to our front desk when checking in. The workshop will be held in our St. Crispin’s lecture room located on B1. \nThis workshop is designed to teach classic hand sewing techniques in beading and leatherwork. Rosary Spence will guide you through the steps of creating moccasins by hand including pattern-making\, beadwork\, design\, construction and care for your finished product. Students will be provided with all the necessary tools to complete their project and guided through the process from start to finish. This is a course best suited for youth 12+ and adults. \nSpace is limited! Born and on western shores of James Bay\, Fort Albany First Nation\, Mushkego Cree Territory\, Spence strongly believes in the ability to heal our communities through the strength of the youth and the wisdom of our elders. Music has been a lifetime journey for Spence\, singing since early childhood and playing an array of instruments since her early teens. Spence possesses an extensive background and experience as a designer\, a performing artist\, and an arts facilitator. SUMMARY:2022 Founder's Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Forensic Fashion: Investigating Old Clothes from the Rag Trade to the Lab \nJoin the BSM as we welcome renowned fashion historian\, curator\, and forensic garment analyst Amber Butchart as our 2022 Founder’s lecturer who will discuss her work in forensic garment analysis. In this illustrated talk\, she considers the power of old clothes in storytelling across literature and myth\, the global problems inherent in our discarded old clothing\, and the potential of fashion as a tool for forensic science. \nA Q+A and reception will follow the conversation. She is a former Research Fellow at the University of the Arts London\, and is a regular public lecturer across the UK’s leading arts institutions. She researches and presents documentaries for television and radio\, including the six-part series A Stitch in Time for BBC Four that fused biography\, art and the history of fashion to explore the lives of historical figures through the clothes they wore. Amber is an external adviser for the National Crime Agency as a Forensic Garment Analyst\, working on cases that require investigation of clothing and textiles. She has published five books on the history and culture of clothes\, including The Fashion of Film\, Nautical Chic\, and a history of British fashion illustration for the British Library. She is currently curating an exhibition for the Fashion and Textile Museum in Bermondsey\, to open in 2023.
