In this conversation\, Dr. Chika Stacy Oriuwa will be talking about her career journey as an accomplished physician\, being recognized as Best Health Magazine’s “2020 Women of the Year”\, and what the process was like when she was recently honoured in Mattel’s #ThankYouHeroes campaign.  \nRSVP Here \n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER: \n \nDr. Chika Stacy Oriuwa is an accomplished physician\, spoken word poet\, and advocate for racialized and marginalized populations. She is a graduate of the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine and is currently a resident doctor in psychiatry at U of T.   \nAs the only Black medical student in her cohort and the first Black woman to be recognized as sole valedictorian within the faculty\, Chika has become a vocal advocate for improving disparities in Black health and confronting institutional discrimination. Through her work as an ambassador and educator with U of T’s Black Student Application Program\, the university admitted the largest group of Black medical students in Canadian history in 2020. \nChika has been recognized as one of Best Health Magazine‘s “2020 Women of the Year”\, was named one of TIME magazine’s “2021 Next Generational Leaders”\, and was recently honoured in Mattel’s #ThankYouHeroes campaign with a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll made in her image to commemorate her contributions as a frontline healthcare worker.

SUMMARY:Nuit Blanche: The Parallax Path
DESCRIPTION:Featuring a collection of shoes that are significant to each of their journeys\, emerging artists from underserved communities tell their unique stories of how barriers and challenges faced daily have allowed them to share a commonality of resilience. Visitors will experience this through pre-recorded performances of spoken word\, storytelling\, singing and rapping. This project is presented by VIBE Arts and is part of ArtworxTO: Toronto’s Year of Public Art 2021-2022. \nMEET THE ARTISTS:\n\nABOUT PAUL-DANIEL TORRES (Creative Director): \n \nMy name’s Paul-Daniel Torres (or Danny depending where and how you know me). I’m a Toronto native\, born from Ecuadorian parents. I try to embody the elements of the immigrant dream in my life and in my work. With things such as; Hope and resilience in the face of adversity and the quest for happiness\, that’s what it’s all about. My films have screened all around the world from Canada\, Greece\, Egypt and beyond. Including finding screens at Jackman Hall\, TIFF’s Bell Lightbox\, and the SIFF Uptown. My latest film “Do Turtles Swim in Maple Syrup?” is currently on its festival run. Already winning Best Screenplay and Score at Sheridan’s Screen Art awards\, Best Direction at the Toronto Youth Shorts\, Best Student Film at the Durham International Film Festival\, and The Young Trail Blazer Award at the Official Latino Film Festival sponsored by HBO. As well I run “The People’s Youth Film Project” a non-for-profit aimed and made for racialized youth from underserved communities. Which aims to create pathways to employment and post-secondary education. As to put the power of film in the hands of youth. Our biggest goal is to grow a new generation of independent racialized Toronto filmmakers who can depend on each other. Ensuring we tell our stories\, that move the needle and are for and by us. \nPaul-Daniel Torres is also the Creative Director of The Parallex Path project that you will see at the event!\n\n\n\nABOUT NICHOLAS RIDICULOUS: \n \nThe one and only Nicholas Ridiculous is a dynamic catalyst of a creator. A son of fiction and student of story\, raised under the neon glow of a boxy television set. As a veteran of the child welfare industry\, Nicholas is a shapeshifting wanderer dangling between worlds. Using the windows of reality that pass-by as inspiration for his works in traditional and digital artistry\, fashion design\, musical creation\, and story-telling. An escape artist at best\, with no where to go. But in the end\, we all just wanna find home. \n\n\nABOUT MANEESA VEERAVEL: \n \nManeesa Veeravel is an interdisciplinary artist with over a decades experience in arts creation\, facilitation and anti-oppressive work. They are a mad\, queer\, Tamil\, gender fluid\, survivor born on the stolen\, traditional and ancestral lands of the Wendake-Nionwentsïo\, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation\, Haudenosaunee\, and Anishinabewaki territories. Maneesa’s practice reflects intergenerational wits\, wounds and wisdoms as it pertains to land\, body and the notion of belonging.\n \n\nABOUT SRE: \n \nVersatile between Hip Hop\, R&B and Spoken Word\, SRE (pronounced as “sorry”) is an artist who speaks through a different lens through his\nartistic approach. Born and raised in Scarborough\, Ontario\, he has been inspired by the likes of Drake\, Andy Mineo\, Shiwan\, J.Cole & Travis Greene. His inspiration for music originates from his journey of life through past experiences and future aspirations. SRE is currently an emerging artist in VibeArt’s NeXt Black Youth Mentorship program & Emerging Artist Roster program. His unique style and sound will leave you in suspense for what is yet to come.\n \n\nABOUT LUCIA LAFORD: \n \nLucia Laford (Waawaaskone Qwe) is an Anishinaabe artist from Sault Ste. Marie\, Ontario. She has learned and followed in her fathers footsteps and paints in a traditional Woodland style. Lucia also employs many other techniques in her art practice\, including contemporary styles using a variety of mediums. Lucia has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in Toronto and Sault Ste. Marie. She has also live painted for the ROM during the Anishinabeg art and power ongoing exhibition. Her work also includes mural painting and running mural workshops for children. Most recently she painted 4 murals for the Fort York Indigenous Festival and created the painting used for promotional material for the annual Native Child and Family Services Pow Wow.

DESCRIPTION:Learn the traditional art of moccasin-making with expert Indigenous artisan Rosary Spence! \nThis is a six-week (18 hour) course that’s FREE for Indigenous Youth and Young Adults (First Nation/Metis/Inuit ages 12-30 yrs). DESCRIPTION:Forensic Fashion: Investigating Old Clothes from the Rag Trade to the Lab \nJoin the BSM as we welcome renowned fashion historian\, curator\, and forensic garment analyst Amber Butchart as our 2022 Founder’s lecturer who will discuss her work in forensic garment analysis. In this illustrated talk\, she considers the power of old clothes in storytelling across literature and myth\, the global problems inherent in our discarded old clothing\, and the potential of fashion as a tool for forensic science. \nA Q+A and reception will follow the conversation. She researches and presents documentaries for television and radio\, including the six-part series A Stitch in Time for BBC Four that fused biography\, art and the history of fashion to explore the lives of historical figures through the clothes they wore. Amber is an external adviser for the National Crime Agency as a Forensic Garment Analyst\, working on cases that require investigation of clothing and textiles. She has published five books on the history and culture of clothes\, including The Fashion of Film\, Nautical Chic\, and a history of British fashion illustration for the British Library. She is currently curating an exhibition for the Fashion and Textile Museum in Bermondsey\, to open in 2023.

DESCRIPTION:  \nA Conversation with fashion historian and author Dr. Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell\n \nContemporary artists\, fashion designers\, and filmmakers often imagine Marie Antoinette as an eighteenth-century Imelda Marcos or Carrie Bradshaw\, obsessed with shoes. But while the queen undoubtedly owned many shoes\, there is no evidence that she favored them over any other item of clothing. Like “Let them eat cake\,” her shoe lust is a myth that persists because it perfectly fits our notions of her greed and frivolity. It may also stem from the fact that several shoes are among the relatively few articles of clothing belonging to the queen that survive today\, and many have made headlines by drawing record prices at auctions. In this virtual talk\, Dr. Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell will explore the myths and realities of Marie-Antoinette’s shoe collection followed by a Q&A with Director & Senior Curator Elizabeth Semmelhack.  \nRSVP HERE \n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER: \n \nDr. Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell is an award-winning fashion historian\, curator\, and journalist based in Los Angeles. She is the author of Fashion Victims: Dress at the Court of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette (Yale\, 2015)\, Worn on This Day: The Clothes That Made History (Running Press\, 2019)\, The Way We Wed: A Global History of Wedding Fashion (Running Press\, 2020)\, Red\, White\, and Blue on the Runway: The 1968 White House Fashion Show and the Politics of American Style (Kent State University Press\, 2022)\, and Skirts: Fashioning Modern Femininity in the 20th Century (St. Martin’s Press\, 2022). She has written about fashion\, art\, and culture for The Atlantic\, The Washington Post\, Politico\, Slate\, and The Wall Street Journal and has appeared on NPR\, the Biography Channel\, and Reelz\, along with several podcasts. DESCRIPTION:Cost: $80/per person\nFriends of the BSM: $60/per person\nWhen: January 8 and 15 from 12:30pm to 4:30pm\nLength: 8 hours total (4 hours per class with a break included)\nWhere: Bata Shoe Museum (327 Bloor St. W.) \nLearn how to create your own cozy slippers\, and keep your toes warm all winter long! Create a paper pattern\, cut your pieces from industrial felt\, and assemble with hand-sewing techniques. If you’re super keen\, there will be embroidery floss and other embellishments so you can customize the uppers however you like. All materials for this workshop will be provided. \nThis 2-part workshop will take place in our Footprints lecture room at the Bata Shoe Museum (327 Bloor St. W.) on January 8 and 15. Please present your ticket to our Front Desk when arriving. Each ticket includes admission to the museum. Space is limited to 10 participants and registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Cost: Included with General Admission\nWhen: Everyday from 10am to 4pm (Craft bags on January 1st) \nCelebrate the holiday season with our shoe-themed games and crafts for kids and families. Create your own ice skate craft\, DIY your own ski ornament\, or make yourself a puzzle and so much more!
