Attendees will also have the opportunity to view the galleries\, including our newest exhibition Dressed to Impress: Footwear and Consumerism in the 1980s.  \nEvening Agenda\nDoors open at 6:30pm\nDiscussion begins at 7:00pm \n \nABOUT THE SPEAKER: \n \nAfter studying Art History at Ecole du Louvre\, Sarah Andelman co-founded and curated the iconic high fashion\, streetwear\, and lifestyle boutique Colette in 1997 alongside her mother Colette Roussaux. Located in Paris\, France\, the three floor 8\,000 square feet concept store contained an exhibition space\, bookshop\, and an extensive selection of luxury products including fashion and accessories to souvenirs\, magazines\, and specialty products.  \nDuring its 20-year journey\, Andelman created a cultural phenomenon with her vision and influence; developing collaborations with brands\, like Chanel\, Hermes\, Louis Vuitton\, or Balenciaga. The global epicenter for creativity\, Colette was the first to showcase new designers\, who would later become internationally renowned. It quickly became the place to be. From celebrities to socialites\, from riches to wannabes\, everybody wanted to be seen at Colette. Acclaimed designer Karl Lagerfeld said\, “It’s the only shop where I go because they have things no one else has”\, and Forbes magazine called it “The trendiest store in the world”. When Colette closed in 2017\, Osman Ahmed of the Business of Fashion called it “the end of an era”.  \nA year later\, Sarah launched JUST AN IDEA\, a consulting company building bridges between disciplines with an expertise on collaborations and retail experiences. In this workshop\, you will learn about the different perfume ingredients; how they were created and their aromatherapy benefits. All materials and general access to the museum are included.   \nThis workshop is designed for adults at all skill levels. \nInspired by: In Bloom: Flowers and Footwear  \nBUY YOUR TICKETS  \nABOUT TRICIA GNADT: \n \nTricia Gnadt is an artisanal perfumer and organic skincare developer who focuses on wild harvested and foraged scent profiles. Originally from North Texas\, Tricia learned to develop solid perfumes from the native plants of her homeland. Her traditional French technique— called enfleurage— uses real flower petals to develop a natural solid perfume that smells identical to a fresh flower profile. Now local to Toronto\, Tricia is continuing to develop perfumes local to her environment. Learn the process behind this ancient technique and the practice methods of organic perfumery at the Bata Shoe Museum. This solid perfume workshop allows you to work directly with plant material to make your own natural rose solid perfume— from petal to perfume.

Board of Directors\, Bata Shoe Museum. \nKnown locally as a “fashion lawyer”\, Anjli uses her platform to educate on the value of Canadian design\, and through buying\, wearing\, and promoting independent designers\, she leads by example. Anjli has tirelessly devoted her legal practice to helping independent designers understand their rights\, know their worth\, and navigate all areas of the law that impact their fashion business\, including contract\, employment\, and intellectual property.

This is the workshop for you! In celebration of our upcoming exhibition Exhibit A: Investigating Crime and Footwear\, Dramatic Soles: Writing Plays and Perspectives in Someone Else’s Shoes welcomes new and emerging playwrights to explore the writing process as inspired by footwear and crime. Join celebrated Canadian Playwright Steven Elliott Jackson in learning play constructing\, formatting\, character construction\, plot development\, and theme devices that make great plays. Learners will leave with a ten-minute play and the skills to write bigger and longer works. Museum admission\, instruction\, and light refreshments are all included. There will be a 1-hour lunch break built into the schedule. Lunch will not be provided. \nBUY YOUR TICKETS  \n\nABOUT STEVEN ELLIOTT JACKSON: \n \nSteven Elliott Jackson is an award-winning playwright based out of the Region of Waterloo. In 2017\, his play\, “The Seat Next To The King”\, which won Best New Play at The Toronto Fringe in 2017\, performed in Kitchener and Buffalo in 2019\, was published by Scirocco Drama in April 2018. In 2020\, his play\, “Three Ordinary Men” won Best New Play at the Hamilton Fringe Festival\, was selected as a finalist in the ScreenCraft Stage Play contest\, and nominated 5 times for the 2022 Dora Awards (Canada’s biggest theatre awards). In 2022\, Steven premiered two shows at the Toronto Fringe\, the acclaimed drama\, “The Garden of Alla” and the critically loved family musical\, “The Prince’s Big Adventure”. In 2023\, his immersive play\, “The Will of A Woman” premiered at the historic Spadina House. He also received funding from the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund to develop the drama\, “Comfort And Joy” and was commissioned by Green Light Arts to develop “Poppies For Bukkan” for a future season.

Gardening experience was gained working for the Toronto Parks Department both outside and in the greenhouses. \nStarting in 1982 she worked at Spadina Museum\, first helping with the rehabilitation of the grounds and then managing the 6 acres\, growing the annuals and vegetables used in the gardens and supplying decorative plants and flower arrangements for the house. \nBecause Spadina is an historic site\, Wendy did much research into the availability of plant material in Toronto over the time period of the house\, which was originally built in 1866 and has given talks to garden clubs and historic societies.

Join us throughout the summer from Monday to Friday for our exciting new Shoe Detective Academy! Learn about shoe forensics\, create your own cypher to decode a bracelet you can make yourself\, complete puzzles\, solve a shoe heist and more. Collect a stamp after each activity to earn your Shoe Detective badge!+  \nFamily programs are free with museum admission and do not require tickets or reservations unless otherwise noted. Parents must be in attendance.  \n+Stamps and detective badges will only be available until 4:30pm from Monday – Friday \nShoe Done It Presentation (11:30 am and 3:00 pm)\nKids will learn the importance of footwear forensics when it comes to solving crime! Using our hands-on collection\, kids will discover a variety of footwear inspired by our Exhibit A exhibition and learn the stories behind them. Finally\, you’ll get the chance to play the detective while you listen to a short mystery story\, and guess who committed the crime based on the footprint “left at the scene”. \nWeekday Drop-In Activities\nAvailiable from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm \nAll materials provided\, this self-guided family station is a great way to commemorate your visit to the BSM by making a unique take-home craft. Activities include: \n\nSecret Code Bracelet making with special decoding cypher\nMorse Code Machine\nPuzzles\n\nMuseum Scavenger Hunts*\nShoe Heist \nUse the clues to explore the galleries and find the hidden items for your chance to win a prize. For kids 8+. \nI Spy Cards\nShoes can have a lot of intricate detail. Use this visual guide to search and find the various patterns and motifs. Led by Choreographer\, Educator\, and Dancer Melissa Bartrem\, this adult dancercise class is designed for those all skill levels. Channel your inner Jane Fonda and wear your best 80s bodysuits\, leg warmers\, and neon. Feel free to explore all of the current exhibitions including Dressed to Impress: Footwear and Consumerism in the 1980s after the the class \nThis event is open to all ages\, but recommend participants be 16+. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult who must also purchase a ticket \nPlease check in 10-30 minutes prior to the event starting. DESCRIPTION:When: Saturday\, September 21\, 10:30 am to 1:00 pm (Doors open 10:00 am)\nCost: $45 person\nFriends of the BSM: $40/person\nWhere: Bata Shoe Museum – Footprints Room \nBUY TICKETS  \nJoin Toronto based Cree-Métis artist Marissa Magneson for a beginner friendly beading workshop! Through this hands-on workshop\, participants will walk away with a greater understanding of Indigenous bead work\, tools and techniques\, and will work to complete a small beaded Orange Shirt pin. A portion of the proceeds will also be donated to the Woodlands Cultural Centre: Save the Evidence campaign. Space is limited\, register today to avoid disappointment. No experience is necessary!  \nA note from the artist: “I include tobacco in these pins recognizing that learning and discussing topics including\, but not limited to residential schools are heavy. The medicine is there to help us in navigating those feelings\, and our commitment to and responsibility of reconciliAction. She has a BFA honours degree from York University (Toronto\, Canada) and a Master’s degree in Canadian and Indigenous Studies from Trent University (Peterborough\, Canada). Her research explores Indigenous methodologies using beadwork as visual storytelling. Marissa’s work is rooted in decolonizing education\, strengthening community\, and cultural reclamation. In her collaborative work with various organizations\, Marissa works towards photographing\, consulting\, educating\, and creating programming in meaningful ways. Marissa would like to acknowledge her maternal grandmother\, Elaine Jessop\, whose life-long work on Indigenous women’s rights inspires her own journey. \nMarissa is currently pursuing her Ph.D. at York University in the Faculty of Education where she is researching “Beadwork as Pedagogy: A Bridge Towards Cultural Reclamation and (re)Conciliation.”
