DESCRIPTION:Cost: $60/person\nFriends of the BSM: $40/person\nWhen: Saturday\, May 13 from 1:00pm to 2:30pm\nLength: 1.5 hours total\nWhere: Footprints Lecture Room at the Bata Shoe Museum (327 Bloor St. W.) \nIn celebration of our upcoming exhibition In Bloom: Flowers and Footwear\, the Bata Shoe Museum is excited to host terrarium making workshops with Alexandra Vella from Alexscapes! Celebrate nature by inviting a small piece of it into your home. In this workshop\, participants will be able to make their very own terrarium inspired by wabi-sabi\, the Japanese tradition of finding beauty in imperfection\, impermanence and change.\nParticipants are welcome to bring their own plants to incorporate into their terrarium if they wish. \n\n \nBUY YOUR TICKETS  \nPlease present your ticket at the Front Desk upon arrival. \nThis workshop will take place in-person in Footprints at the Bata Shoe Museum (located on the ground level). If you no longer can attend and would like to request a refund\, please email info@batashoemuseum.ca \nABOUT THE HOST\n \nBased in Toronto\, Alexscapes is driven by the natural world  and aims to recreate its most inspiring elements in the home — Specializing in terrariums and aquascaping\, Alex’s goal is to create a sense of peace and calm for people living in an urban landscape.  \nFrom Alex: So much of aquascaping is trying to manipulate the natural world\, but we are always at the will of growth and the constantly changing evolution of nature. Nature itself is wabi sabi and beautifully imperfect. Wabi: to live a pared down life in tune with nature\, while the fluid life of whatever is planted in it\, exemplifies Sabi: or the passage of time. Showcasing terrarium plants within minimalist glass vessels embraces the imperfections of nature as a way to highlight the beauty in objects with history and life\, appreciating the minor details and taking time to slow down. Bringing the beauty of nature into the home adds a life full of soul\, and a beauty that celebrates the impermanence and the incomplete. It means living in a way that appreciates the beauty and the details of the mundane and encourages us to stop and appreciate the small things in life that we have a tendency to overlook.

DESCRIPTION:  \nA Conversation with Avalon Fotheringham\n \nJoin us for a fascinating conversation on Wednesday\, May 24 at 3pm EST with Avalon Fotheringham\, curator for the South Asian textiles and dress collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London\, UK to learn more about her career journey\, her work in textiles and more. The conversation will be followed by a Q&A by our Director & Senior Curator Elizabeth Semmelhack. \nRSVP HERE \n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER: \n \nAvalon Fotheringham is curator for the South Asian textiles and dress collection at the V&A. Trained as a textile artist before transitioning to textile history\, she joined the V&A in 2014 as Research Assistant on the 2015 exhibition The Fabric of India\, curated by Rosemary Crill and Divia Patel\, and went on to become a curator in 2016.  Since joining the museum she has published The Indian Textile Sourcebook: Patterns and Techniques\, as well as essays and articles on Indian floral patterns\, the impacts of colonialism on Indian dress\, the history of beetle-wing embroidery\, the Indian transition to synthetic dyes\, and more. In 2021 she helped establish The V&A’s Karun Thakar Fund for the study of Asian and African textiles and dress\, which supports students and independent researchers of Asian and African textiles and dress all over the world.

The conversation will feature high-ranking and influential Black women in basketball and sneaker culture\, including Katherine Allen\, Nadine Brown\, Savanna Hamilton\, Dinara Horsford\, and Marsha-Gaye Knight. \nHaving women with lived experience lead the way\, build connections\, and offer ideas for growth is necessary to activate these important spaces. In The World’s Most Unique Basketball Tournament\, each combatant is doing their best to out think\, outlast and outscore all that oppose him/her in scoring 21 points during a timed and referee-regulated game whose roots are bound in a person’s first playground experiences with basketball. This basketball tournament concept\, originated in New York City by hip hop legend Bobbito Garcia\, features multiple players and no teammates. Canada is one of many countries participating\, having won the last three consecutive FC21 All World Finals. \nMEET THE SPEAKERS:\n\nABOUT KATHERINE ALLEN: \n \nKatherine recently joined the Toronto Raptors as Manager\, Social Impact\, with a background in marketing partnerships and strategic planning. Katherine has experience developing community-oriented activation and brand strategies for Canada’s leading brands in the non-profit\, banking\, insurance\, telecom\, and apparel sectors through her years at adidas\, and on the agency-side at MKTG Canada. She is one of the top point guards in the country with goals of playing for her province\, country\, Division 1 in the United States and eventually as a professional. Dinara is a leader on and off the court\, already is giving back to other young players to help them and help her hone her craft.\n \n\nABOUT MARSHA-GAYE KNIGHT: \n \nMarsha-Gaye Knight has worked as a sport marketing professional for over 10 years with notable companies like Mosaic Sales Solutions\, Rogers and the National Hockey League (NHL). The focus on fashion is to make “Original” one of a kind pieces for collections and for personalized custom orders. He also adds crochet to already made items to renew into “Uplifted”(upcycled) pieces\, giving them new life! Legin started teaching crochet to his friends and youth in his community immediately after learning. He felt the connection to passing this art form on\, while building a business to open up opportunities for himself and others. When encountering individuals he taught\, they always express their gratitude and strong belief that learning crochet gave them values that apply to their lives.

His passion has allowed him to continue to grow\, innovate\, and expand his artistry through Legin Knits and Art Of Crochet. The focus on fashion is to make “Original” one of a kind pieces for collections and for personalized custom orders. He also adds crochet to already made items to renew into “Uplifted”(upcycled) pieces\, giving them new life! Legin started teaching crochet to his friends and youth in his community immediately after learning. He felt the connection to passing this art form on\, while building a business to open up opportunities for himself and others. When encountering individuals he taught\, they always express their gratitude and strong belief that learning crochet gave them values that apply to their lives.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to view the galleries\, including our newest exhibition Dressed to Impress: Footwear and Consumerism in the 1980s.  \nEvening Agenda\nDoors open at 6:30pm\nDiscussion begins at 7:00pm \n \nABOUT THE SPEAKER: \n \nAfter studying Art History at Ecole du Louvre\, Sarah Andelman co-founded and curated the iconic high fashion\, streetwear\, and lifestyle boutique Colette in 1997 alongside her mother Colette Roussaux. Located in Paris\, France\, the three floor 8\,000 square feet concept store contained an exhibition space\, bookshop\, and an extensive selection of luxury products including fashion and accessories to souvenirs\, magazines\, and specialty products.  \nDuring its 20-year journey\, Andelman created a cultural phenomenon with her vision and influence; developing collaborations with brands\, like Chanel\, Hermes\, Louis Vuitton\, or Balenciaga. The global epicenter for creativity\, Colette was the first to showcase new designers\, who would later become internationally renowned. It quickly became the place to be. From celebrities to socialites\, from riches to wannabes\, everybody wanted to be seen at Colette. Acclaimed designer Karl Lagerfeld said\, “It’s the only shop where I go because they have things no one else has”\, and Forbes magazine called it “The trendiest store in the world”. When Colette closed in 2017\, Osman Ahmed of the Business of Fashion called it “the end of an era”.  \nA year later\, Sarah launched JUST AN IDEA\, a consulting company building bridges between disciplines with an expertise on collaborations and retail experiences. Originally from North Texas\, Tricia learned to develop solid perfumes from the native plants of her homeland. Her traditional French technique— called enfleurage— uses real flower petals to develop a natural solid perfume that smells identical to a fresh flower profile. Board of Directors\, Bata Shoe Museum. \nKnown locally as a “fashion lawyer”\, Anjli uses her platform to educate on the value of Canadian design\, and through buying\, wearing\, and promoting independent designers\, she leads by example. Anjli has tirelessly devoted her legal practice to helping independent designers understand their rights\, know their worth\, and navigate all areas of the law that impact their fashion business\, including contract\, employment\, and intellectual property.
