THE BSM ANNOUNCES NEW CREATIVE DIRECTOR

Christine Bata Schmidt, Chair of the Bata Shoe Museum, is pleased to announce the appointment of Elizabeth Semmelhack to the new position of Creative Director of the Bata Shoe Museum. Ms. Semmelhack’s new responsibilities are effective immediately.  As Creative Director Ms. Semmelhack will provide strategic senior leadership and management and be responsible for integrating the museum’s activities within the framework of a common vision while continuing to direct research, exhibitions and collections management at the museum.

Since 2000, Ms. Semmelhack has curated over twenty exhibitions for the museum, including the critically acclaimed On a Pedestal: Renaissance Chopines to Baroque Heels and the blockbuster Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture. She has also authored numerous books, essays, and articles on the history of footwear including the award-winning Roger Vivier: Process to Perfection, Standing Tall: The Curious History of Men in Heels and Heights of Fashion: A History of the Elevated Shoe.

“We are excited that Elizabeth has agreed to take on this challenging assignment. As Senior Curator, she has been instrumental in growing the museum’s recognition for excellence in scholarly research and exhibitions and we are looking forward to her continued ground-breaking work in the capacity of Creative Director,” says Ms. Bata Schmidt.

In addition to her new responsibilities, over the coming months Ms. Semmelhack will also serve as Acting Director of Operations.

Says Ms. Semmelhack, “I have always been inspired by the boldness and commitment of the Museum’s founder Mrs. Sonja Bata. She dared to make footwear the subject of serious study, and she built a remarkable collection and a museum dedicated to discovering and sharing the cultural stories footwear has to tell. I am committed to honouring the spirit of our founder and helping to lead the museum forward.”

Ms. Semmelhack and the BSM team is currently focused on creating exciting exhibitions, programming and events for 2020 when the museum will celebrate 25 years as one of Toronto’s foremost cultural landmarks and a world renowned institution with a reputation for global excellence.  Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to celebrating this milestone with you.
